Nowa Huta and the Communism Tour in Krakow: Which One Takes You Inside?

Updated October 13, 2026 · 5 min read

To see something you cannot see on your own, book the Nowa Huta steelworks administration buildings and shelters tour, €25.08 per person, 1.5 to 2 hours. It goes inside the two administration buildings of the steelworks and down into the bomb shelter between them. The other tours below are good, but most of them show you the district from the street.

What Nowa Huta is

Nowa Huta was built as a model socialist city for the steelworkers of the 1950s, a planned district of wide avenues, a central square and monumental architecture. The listings describe it as one of the best-preserved examples of communist urban planning in Europe, and the steelworks next to it still operate.

The tours differ on one question: whether you go inside. Most listings include a stop at Plac Centralny, the Central Square, which now carries the name of Ronald Reagan. The steelworks buildings and the shelter are the part that only the guided visits that list them include.

The differences that matter

Inside versus outside. The steelworks administration tour is built around entering the buildings, including the director’s offices, the radio station and the underground tunnel between them. The vintage car tour has the same visits as options: the listing marks the steelworks offices and the Cold War shelter as visits “if option chosen”, with an extra fee. The private Trabant tour, on its basic route, looks at the headquarters buildings from the outside. The deluxe version goes into the bunkers.

What “private” means. The two Trabant tours are private groups and are priced per person here, so the cost depends on your group size. Both offer pickup from a choice of points in the centre. Check the booking page for the price at your party size.

The pay-as-you-wish walk. The walking tour is run on the same pay-as-you-wish basis as other Walkative tours: it is up to the guest how to reward the guide, and the amount you pay at booking covers the reservation fee and the guide’s payment. It starts at Ronald Reagan Plaza and runs in English or German.

The golf cart is for ground, not buildings. It is the cheapest way to cover a large district, with an audio guide in 27 languages and a live guide in English and Polish. The listing describes a ride past the Central Square and steelworks district, so it is the right choice if walking is the problem, not if the shelter is the goal.

Practical points

  • Book the steelworks tour early. The listing recommends booking at least one day in advance.
  • Mobility. The steelworks tour lists wheelchair users and people with mobility impairments as not suitable. The walking tour and the golf cart list themselves as wheelchair accessible.
  • Languages. The vintage car tour is in English, and Polish or Russian can be arranged if you book at least 48 hours ahead, subject to availability. It is run by a local non-profit, the Foundation of Positive Promotion of Nowa Huta.
  • Meeting point. The walking tour meets in Nowa Huta itself, the vintage car tour offers pickup or a meeting point in Nowa Huta, and the meeting point of the steelworks tour depends on the option you pick.

Which to choose

  • Inside the steelworks, on a budget: the administration buildings and shelters tour.
  • Walking, with a local story: the Walkative walk.
  • Little walking, many sights: the golf cart.
  • A car with pickup, and the option to go inside: the vintage car tour.
  • A private group in a Trabant: the Crazy Guides tour, with the deluxe version if you want the bunkers.
