Wawel Castle and Cathedral: Which Ticket Do You Actually Need?

If you want to go inside both the castle and the Cathedral with a guide, book the Wawel Castle and Cathedral guided tour, €54. The listing includes a skip-the-line ticket to one permanent castle exhibition and the Cathedral ticket, which is the part you would otherwise have to buy separately at the Cathedral’s own office. If you are happy to plan alone, buying the official tickets yourself is the cheaper route.

Why this is confusing

Wawel Hill is one place with several ticket offices. You can walk the grounds and courtyards without a ticket. Each exhibition inside the castle needs its own ticket, and Wawel Cathedral is run by a separate institution that sells its own ticket at its own office. The Castle does not sell Cathedral tickets.

That arrangement is why many tours titled “Wawel” turn out to be an outdoor walk. Before booking, read what the listing includes and check whether it names the exhibition.

What each ticket covers

  • Castle exhibitions. The State Rooms and Royal Private Apartments, the Crown Treasury and Armoury and several others each have their own ticket. The Castle II ticket covers the whole second floor, meaning the State Rooms and the Ottoman Turkish tents.
  • Cathedral. One ticket, 26 PLN for a standard adult, covers the Cathedral, the Sigismund Bell, the Royal Tombs and the Cathedral Museum. One tour listing says entry to the Cathedral follows the queue.
  • Monday. On Mondays from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM selected exhibitions, including the castle’s second floor, are free. The free tickets are limited and can run out.

Hours vary by season. The Cathedral is open Monday to Saturday 9:00 AM–5:00 PM and Sunday 12:30 PM–5:00 PM from April to October, and 9:00 AM–4:00 PM and 12:30 PM–4:00 PM from November to March; it closes on Good Friday, Holy Saturday, Easter Sunday, 24 December and 25 December. Check the castle’s own booking site before you go, as tickets are limited and can sell out.

The traps

The audioguide tour is honest about what it is, but the cheap price tempts people into thinking it is a castle visit. Its booking page states that going inside the buildings is not included. It is a good way to understand the courtyards, and nothing more.

The Old Town and Wawel walking tour is a good Old Town tour with Wawel at the end, not a castle visit: its list of sights names Wawel Hill with the Cathedral and the castle’s courtyard, which is the outside of the complex.

The Cathedral tour says in its own text to choose carefully, because one of its options does not include the castle. It also warns that entry to the Cathedral follows the queue.

Meeting points and dress code

The guided castle and Cathedral tour does not meet on the hill. It meets at St Mary Magdalene Square at the Piotr Skarga monument, and the listing says latecomers cannot join once the group has left, with no refund. Arrive 10 minutes early. Groups are limited to 30 under the museum’s limits, and headsets are provided for groups of nine or more. The listing also notes a dress code for places of worship: shorts and sleeveless tops are not allowed, and knees and shoulders must be covered.

Which to choose

  • Inside the castle and the Cathedral, with explanation: the €54 guided tour.
  • Inside, on your own budget: buy the castle ticket on the official site and the Cathedral ticket at its own office. The Wawel Castle tour with entry tickets sits between the two.
  • Outside only, in a good-value package: the walking tour above.
